Ferries are not merely transportation vehicles but significant public spaces that establish strong
ties between Istanbul’s cultural identity and collective memory. This study focuses on the
interior of Paşabahçe Ferry, aiming to adapt its spaces to contemporary user needs while
preserving its historical identity. The study proposes a research-based design following a
methodology that consists of literature review, on-site observations, and user surveys. Analysis
indicates that while the vessel maintains a strong visual connection with the sea, there are
deficiencies in acoustic comfort, seating ergonomics, accessibility, and digital infrastructure.
The resulting design proposal redefines the ferry as a functional public interior that bridges
maritime heritage with 21st-century urban requirements. The space is organized into functional
zones to support diverse scenarios, balancing social interaction areas with quiet spaces for
individual use. By prioritizing technological integration and ergonomics,
the project revitalizes the ferry as a high-quality public space within the urban fabric.
