This study investigates the atmospheric potential of light by drawing on the concept of light
space interaction within Gernot Böhme’s theory of architectural atmospheres. The relationship
between light and space, and the influence of changing lighting conditions on spatial
perception, are examined through a design proposal developed for the Kılıç Ali Paşa Hammam
in Istanbul. The hammam was selected due to its historical character, clear spatial hierarchy,
and its capacity to reveal perceptual changes under varying lighting conditions. Within the
proposal, multiple lighting scenarios were developed by manipulating the qualities of light,
including color, intensity, and direction. These scenarios explore how different lighting
conditions transform human–space interaction. The proposed light–space environments were
experienced by users in a virtual reality (VR) setting, and user experiences were evaluated
through a survey to analyze how changing lighting conditions influence spatial perception and
atmospheric experience.
